Unfortunately many that bought into the fad, including children, have irreversibly damaged their bodies and will never be able to live a normal life

Some did for certain, others demanded their parents submit to their whims with institutional support. 'Do you want an alive son or a dead daughter?' was pretty heavy handed by the schools/medical establishment (if you can call the psych industry part of the medical establishment). Kids getting their parents to submit to something outrageous is a power play against authority, as well.
