Terrible from a humanitarian perspective but this seems like it would have been a much cheaper and more efficient way to have won the war in the first place. We could have destroyed their infrastructure, embargoed them, and let them freeze and starve into capitulation.
Sounds terrible but I bet we'd have ended up with far fewer casualties compared to the 20 year war.
