Edward Bernays realized in the 1950s that it's easier to sell things on emotion rather than logic. All advertising since has been overwhelmingly emotionally-oriented. Ideologies have to advertise themselves as well. Some of the most popular ideologies are popular because of the emotional appeal. And, frustratingly, this has gradually leaked over to the sciences and academia more and more.
