I understand that Family Dollar has items for more than $1, in $1 increments or something. We don't have any of those. In my part of the country, we have Dollar Tree which every item in the store is $1. A very few items such as candy are 79 cents.

It's interesting to see what has been happening to Dollar Tree over the past several years. The products are shrinking, shrinking, shrinking... you used to be able to buy a whole pound cake for $1. Now you can buy one slice of a pound cake, prepackaged, for $1. The name brands became off brands. A lot of their product lines just flat disappeared. Some things can no longer sell for $1.

Inflation is a beotch when you have a price point of $1. Beyond a certain point, you can't do anything. You just have to close up shop or rebrand your store chain to the $2 store.

Family Dollar and Dollar General are basically just convenience stores that have a somewhat larger product line and charge even increments of a dollar for things. People think they're cheap because it's a "dollar" store.

In reality the products are cheap, but the prices aren't.
