That does seem plausible. The question is, does a spirit need a physical shell to function and be conscious?

No, but they somehow have everyone convinced that that's a very unfortunate state, even though that makes absolutely no sense and I don't see where people would even learn such bullshit. Yet it's almost universally agreed upon. I even asked about that recently and no one could give me an answer: https://saidit.net/s/whatever/comments/asd2/why_is_being_a_ghost_considered_a_bad_thing/

To answer the title question, because it's an unknown state and normal people are highly invested in their current condition.

I think there's more to it than that. People fear the unknown, but don't assume it's always negative. I think people are brainwashed for physical survival. And recently there's been even more of a push for the divinity of the body, with every major religion suddenly substituting a bodily resurrection for whatever kind of afterlife it once believed in. And of course atheists were already "you are your body".
