There could be a medical issue, there's something he's trying to get your attention about. Sick, angry, jealous, or he feels his litter box is unacceptable for whatever reason. I have heard you're supposed to have n+1 litter boxes where n is the number of cats in the household.

There's always a reason. I'm no cat whisperer. I'll give him a week to shape up. 3rd strike, he's going. I have enough problems. Sleep disruption just ruins me.

The first thing I'd suggest is checking that their pee and poop is normal. A lot of problems can be evident if that's not normal. Pay attention to their movements and what they eat. He's trying to get your attention for some reason and they're simple creatures. Imagine your cat is a demonic 4yr old.
