Because they didn't have access to treatment. Almost no one died in the US that year.

Do you even know what "curable" means? Do you know what HIV does to peoples lives? How it changes them and their path? What the side effects of medications are?

Yes. I have gay friends too. Depending on detection and the quickness of treatment, you exaggerate. It's technically curable now.

Treatable would be a better word. Curable? Not at all. That would mean that they would go off medications and not have it recur. Just because a chronic disease is treatable doesn't mean anybody would want somebody to intentionally give it to them without their knowledge.
