That the Gulf of Tonkin incident was a deliberate excuse for war has been taught in US schools for at least 3 decades. The incident itself has been questioned since it happened 60 years ago.

Interestingly enough, Admiral Morrison who was in charge at the incident, was Jim Morrison's father, lead singer of the legendary band The Doors.
