I asked this on Twitter and was being serious but I didn't get an answer... They're not a federal agency. Why can't we just let them fail and start anew? I guess that would cost faith and the credit rating, but some middle ground surely could be found. Freeze the interest, pay off the principal, reboot a new Fed that's actually a gov agency.
