Both parties are guilty. The additional national debt accumulated during the presidency of Donald Trump was $8.18 trillion. This was a percentage increase of 40.43% from the national debt level when he took office in January 2017. The national debt stood at $20.24 trillion when Trump became president and rose to $28.42 trillion when he left office in January 2021. Some of the factors that contributed to this increase were the tax cuts of 2017, trade war with China, military spending, and COVID-19 wealth transfer to corporations.
