There was a push to give an importance to competition itself and to make people value power over everything else. I believe this has made people apathetic towards the suffering of others, even if it degenerates into violence or even death. Bad nihilism seems to be all the more present nowadays...

A healthy nation should value individuals and the role they should play in society in return. By being recognized for their efforts and contributions to society, I'm sure people would be way more empathetic towards others.
