To play devil's advocate:

If we could control it we can exploit them, boost the profits of the middle class here in America, and the neglectection won't be as bad.

The Truth: As we all know, nothing is ever that simple, and the increased terrorist response against us will result in more freedoms being infringed upon to "protect us" from the hornet nest the politicians kicked.
