The outrage isn't fake, and it's justified.

The impact of ethnic slurs on both the victims and the people overhearing them is documented in the scientific literature.

Lack of outrage is either ignorance or racism, depending on whether you're familiar with the impacts. Probably both.

Overt racism isn't as American as you would like to believe.

The problem is that if they're using racial slurs, they're getting to do their damage as well as letting everyone know they're a fool.
