I wouldn't consider telling people not to vote useful. I would tell GOP voters that the GOP hates them and takes them for granted and that their votes in that context only register their consent to be abused, ignored and taken for granted by the GOP and that the only solution to this is to do all that sort of "Community Organizing" stuff you were invited to mock Obama for having done a great deal of quite effectively because that is how the Democrat party was forced to the left at least on cultural issues.
