I knew what to do the moment I saw the cars begin to slow down. There only option was to move in closer to the retaining wall. Yet they moved away from the wall. What were they thinking?

Did they panic? Why do people panic while sitting comfortably in a car?

Have they never watched an earth quake warning video? (look for supporting structures) Or am I simply more prepared for this situation, having seen landslides and loose bolders on mountain passes?

You made some good points about getting closer to the retaining wall. As for what they were thinking, it could be when they began driving in reverse they changed lanes so that they were obeying traffic laws. Taiwan follows the right-hand traffic rule. When driving in reverse, they switched lanes. But that choice cost the first driver his car. I hope the person was not hurt.

When I am subject to fearful events, I hope I remember to call on the Lord. He can give peace and a sound mind even in the midst of a storm.
