Many decades ago I concluded that the purpose of an organized religion is to make its adherents feel superior to other people. This explains the popularity of organized religions.

No argument there.

Edit: actually just one, on the popularity explanation part. Another aspect that explains it is the child indoctrination part. If the programming is done early enough, it will remain for their entire lifespan no matter what they will learn later on, and they'll automatically spread it to their own offsprings, absolutely believing that it's a good idea.

The mechanism is brilliant, really. Granted, the narrative managers have had a long time to fine-tune it, with multitudes of "so, can we get them to commit mass murder yet?" phases throughout history, with the current one showing that it's still as effective in 2023 as in the bronze age.

We have not evolved one bit.

"Give me the child for the first seven years and I will give you the man."

-- Attributed to Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, though the attribution might have been made mischievously by Voltaire.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
