Bhopal:

Police said on Saturday that a 35-year-old man belonging to a right-wing cow vigilante group was attacked with a sharp weapon by a group of men in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. The incident was captured on video by a witness on his cellphone.

Police said Ravi Vishwakarma, the district in-charge of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad "Gau Raksha" wing, was returning from Hoshangabad in a car along with two others on Friday when the incident took place in Pipariya town, about 150 km from Bhopal.

“A group of men attacked Vishwakarma and two others in the car with sharp weapons. He then fired two rounds, one of which shot Vishwakarma in the chest, killing him on the spot. The other two also suffered injuries. The attackers fled. , "Police Officer Satish Andhwan told news agency PTI.

The officer said, “We have registered a case against 10 people and efforts are on to nab them. This may be the result of the old enmity between Vishwakarma and the attackers. He was the district in-charge of the cow defense wing of the VHP. "

In the video of the incident, six to eight men, some of whom cover their faces with towels and scarves, are first seen attacking a car near a bridge. A woman is heard caressing the man recording the video to leave the area.

Just to clarify for others, a cow vigilante groups are gangs of Hindu fundamentalists who attack people suspected of illegally slaughtering cows, a sacred animal in Hinduism.

Muslims and Dalits (AKA untouchables, those at the bottom of the caste system) are often the targets, though I've heard of Christians being killed too.

Yes. The whole idea is retarded. However, these lynchings are rare (at least on report) thankfully. Cows are taken way too seriously in many parts of India.
