I think this is wrong. From what I've heard the dad likely said something along the lines of "You might as well shoot me!" Hence him lifting his shirt and turning his back on his son. He likely assumed the son had fired a warning shot at him out of anger hence the dad turning around and smacking the son before realizing the son had killed himself.
