It kind of looks like the family was trying to pass, because the car doesn't appear to really be skidding out of control. Before the era of dash cams, I saw a lot of pictures of mangled cars, but didn't undestand how it could happen. Videos like this one make it perfectly clear.

I feel that it's merciful when a whole family gets taken out at once, because nobody is alive to suffer losing the others. Their story simply comes to an abrupt end and they never see it coming.

Yes well to be fair, it's hard to see a gigantic truck in front of you with both of its headlights on

plenty of dumbasses who do this shit, just watch dash cam owners australia compilations

Well, the kids in the back probably didn't see it coming. Assuming they were happy kids, the totality of their life ended up being as happy kids, rather than orphaned kids.

You're an optimist if you believe that kind of crash ensures an instant death for the passengers. Even official announcements of an instant death don't guarantee that the victims didn't agonize for some long and painful minutes.

It that what usually happens when a car is hit so hard that the crumple zone is completely gone?

I don't know, many grown people may have lived enough to feel already satisfied with their lives, and would prefer to die before suffering that much, but I don't think children would think of such a fate as merciful. If I was a kid, I think I would have preferred to suffer through orphanage than to just die, maybe.

I know there are a lot of succesful adults who came from tragedy, including Holocaust survivors, but aside from the initial pain of loss and having to join into another family unit as an outsider, wishing your original family was still around to be a part of your life is a sting that never goes away.

The description said that three of their children were killed.

Well ... it said "three of their children", there might still be some out there.

I remember one time I had to take this road that goes around a mountain. It's one lane per direction and for some reason, there are no railing on the side so if you drive off the road, you fall to your death. Anyway I always drive carefully and strictly follow the speed limit since I don't want to die prematurely. Of course, sometimes you'll get those impatient people behind you who would speed up when there are no cars coming the opposite direction to pass you. I never dared to try to pass anyone in such conditions, it's stupid and risky. I even held my pee for 45 minutes because that's how long it took to get off that mountain. Upon getting back to civilization, a fountain of golden urine exploded gloriously into the toilet.

Oh crap, I know the hold the pee on a crappy road feeling. Better to suffer there than die.
