It's also the class prejudice in the UK.

It's quite common for business leaders to argue those at the top need salaries competitive with the US but they purposely squeeze those at the bottom out of hated for those they see as beneath them. You find graduate salaries in the US at over $100k, straight into the top 5% of earners. In the UK you'll be lucky to find a graduate salary a couple of thousand pounds above the minimum wage. Of course that creates a brain drain out of the UK, but the bosses can just blame the fact they only get the most useless recruits on the feckless young today or the education system.
