An excerpt from that report,

Chinese American communities during the exclusion era (1882-1943) have typically been characterized as "bachelor societies," with most Chinese men either unable to bring wives to the United States because of exclusionary laws or unable to find Chinese American wives because of the low number of Chinese women in the United States. (1) In addition, many states--particularly in the West--passed anti-miscegenation laws that prohibited Chinese from marrying Whites. In other regions of the country, such as the Northeast, however, similar miscegenation laws did not exist. Utilizing data from marriage and census records as well as newspaper accounts, this paper demonstrates that during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Chinese American men in Massachusetts did indeed marry interracially, indicating that historical Chinese American communities were more complex and heterogeneous than are commonly portrayed. This study reinforces the need to reflect upon and analyze the Chinese American experience outside the West in order to achieve a more accurate view of Chinese American history.
