Am I the asshole for not letting my son transition until 18?

It's probably some immature teenager engaging in a creative writing project.
The very idea that you make medically unnecessary and permanent cosmetic surgical changes with numerous health risks before you are even an adult and can really consent to such things is insane.

You’re correct. I look back on the decisions I made in my 20s and see how those directed my life. I can’t even begin to imagine how decisions I made as a teen would have affected me if I was allowed to do all the stupid shit I thought was a good idea at the time.

Yeah basically like I'd even question allowing people in their 20's and 30's to get these procedures done, which is why I think the rather extensive psychological profiling and the internets oft hated gatekeeping is necessary.
I can accept that for some minority of people maybe these procedures help them in some way? I don't really understand it and maintain that simply getting therapy and learning to accept yourself as you are is likely the best way, but I can accept that maybe for some people that doesn't work and maybe they are happier with these procedures done, if it's an adult doing it, they are aware of all the consequence of it, know that it really can't actually make them the opposite sex, and despite all that they still want it, well, they're an adult and can make their own decisions in that area. I just think they need to have a lot of psychological evaluations beforehand and it shouldn't be something they can just get on a whim.
I'm far more critical of the doctors performing them to be honest. I can understand that someone who has gender disphoria thinks they want it and maybe they actually do, but I do think the doctors don't have a duty to give the patient what they "want" so much as they have a duty to heal the patient and to do no harm. And frankly I can't see how a lot of these procedures, especially with some of the gruesome complications that can arise from them, I can't see how doctors can in good faith perform them on people. It seems like naked profiteering off of the mentally ill to me.
