I don't get this obsession in US. I'm Polish. I'm getting asked if I'm Russian ALL THE TIME whenever I'm abroad. And I mean - duh, we Slavs all have similarly sounding accent when it comes to English and Russia is the biggest, hence the most known.

I don't like Russia. Government, a lot of their people... So should I get offended? Fuck no. Correcting someone is not hard work. "No, I'm Polish". There, we're done with this subject.

I get that a lot of black people doesn't know their roots because they were dragged to US hundreds of years ago. But holy fuck... Say you're American. Say you don't know deeper than that. Are you fucking embarrassed because you don't know? It's stupid. I've seen people claiming it's traumatic. Nigga. Go to Ukraine or Iran and we'll talk about REAL trauma.

I mean it's the different way of asking what is your heritage. Where are you really from is just an undiplomatic way of doing it that comes across a bit hostile but it's usually just older people that are having a bad idea trying to ask where is your family originally from.

And it's perfectly fine to deflect the question with an "I don't know" just say you were born here and your family has lived there as long as you can remember or something.

People are just curious for a number of reasons, one of which being your cultural background is important to know so you can avoid causing unneeded offense. Like if someone tells me they are Arab I'm not going to invite them over to dinner for pork chops and I'll make something they can actually eat instead.

Yup. In 99% of cases pure curiosity. Of course you'll find assholes who will go, either vocally on in their heads - "ew, he's X". But even then... Deal with it. Say fuck off or simply leave. Move on.

People are getting so fucking soft it's hilarious. If someone asking, or even mocking your heritage is such a big problem for you? Buddy. Your life is easy.

How much does the average person care about being asked where they're from? Some people are just really interested in genealogy. All the non-white people at my workplace love talking about their culture and ethnic background. We have this social engineering media campaign at my workplace tied to EDI, warning people 'not to ask me where I'm from' but instead to use some alternate phrasing that says the same thing.

Regarding OP she sounds deeply troubled. Very typical of these people to project their issues onto other people. It's probably the only thing that makes her feel good about herself

I wonder if she went to visit her husband's family in Japan how she'd take it if some random Japanese people ask her where she's from?

Oh actually, sorry, I guess she'd collapse under the social anxiety.

Japanese people will always ask where you are from. It's like the standard. Is it unusual? Seems like any time you meet a new person that's one of the first things you ask.

I'll complain about the Japanese though, if you go to Japan and ask a Japanese person where they are from, they'll often just answer "Japan" which is funny since in that context the answer you want is probably more specific to a region.

But yeah if you go poke around the internet you'll find all sorts of these socially anxious types who somehow end up in Japan because they watch way too much anime freaking out at such things like, having someone knock on their door, or getting complimented on their Japanese or ability to use chopsticks. And they can't just say, thanks.

So your ethnicity is a point of pride, but it's racist to ask what your ethnicity is?
