I won't speculate on statistics but that's one of the patterns of trans identification. Sometimes parents that can't reconcile the idea of a gay child so they lie to themselves the child is actually the other gender. Although I think it is more common that a single mother who gets a man hating complex after a nasty breakup raises their son as a daughter because they hate the idea that their baby will grow up into a gross man.
It's also common to see gay men transition and that often comes about because they have an easier time visualizing themselves as a "woman" socially rather than a gay man for whatever reason. Might not be "homophobia" as such, but I do think that when you have societies that overly demonize gay people it's more common to see transexual acceptance come about as an alternative to homosexuality. Iran being a good example.

If that were true then trannies would be so much more common in 90s and early 00s instead of being something that suddenly popped up in late 10s and early 20s.

It's something you saw sporadically in medical literature from the 1950's or so. It didn't suddenly come out of nowhere.
I think the internet drove a lot of it into the open and basically emboldens them to be a lot more open about it.

In terms of mainstream awareness? Yeah, it kind of did. Hearing about troons on a daily basis makes as much sense as hearing about harlequin syndrome.

I suspect the number of people who have an actual clinical diagnosis of gender disphoria that goes beyond a simple "I feel therefore I am" diagnosis common now, is extremely low.
