I'm somewhat conspiratorially minded, my thought is that 1) its a liberal/lefty cause, and thus gets a lot of amplification because of that 2) the world is facing a lot of real world problems right now that no one has very good answers for - crop failures, fuel shortages, housing shortages and focusing on a sideshow distracts people's attention away from govt failures.
