If sound waves indeed impact in any measurable way, then it would be common sense that all that would be necessary to 'listen in', would be some sort of mechanism to put words to voltage irregularities.
This would lean towards it doesn't matter to cover your microphone for privacy, the machine itself is designed to spy.
