I'm not one bit surprised that the Democrats (not liberal minded people) change the way they talk to different groups. It's because they are lying. They are pandering to the audiences.
The Republicans (not conservative minded people) have a smaller and more homogenous base. They can basically repeat a similar message to their audience. They are also lying. However, the story is more consistent.

The likely story is that the Democrats realize that they have angered and unified a large portion of their former political base. This is thinly veiled divide and conquer article.
