I do believe the very fact that "Mainstream Academia" tows the financial-screw-job-on-the-people-line, is why alternative theories like the flat earth are actually common now. People may not be all that smart, but when the establishment, and their controlled Academia push often times absurd agendas, people look elsewhere for truth; hence the ever widening gaps in what people think, believe, and feel.
