i disagree with you on discovery, they took a lot of chances and to my mind it paid off. if your point is "it could be better" perhaps your right.

Not my opinion. Just sharing someone else's, though my opinion is maybe worse:
I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes and found it intolerable.
Why the fuck do they name women with men's names. Fucking stupid right off the bat. Bad writing, bad character, bad introduction, lots of money for special effects and no substance. That's my opinion.

if you are looking for great writing, interesting characters and minimal spent on sets then the works of the great Harold Pinter are something to behold, otherwise Star trek is an entertaining bit of fun.....some times people expect to much.
