I'm not a fan of overlays either, luckily uBlock Origin blocks all that stuff. I recommend giving it a try, makes a lot of webpages more tolerable.

Yeah That's what I used to do, NoScript, uBlock, forced https, AdNauseum, etc. But I realized that if I have to fight a website to make it readable, then the content of that site is nothing more than bait for the ads. If the devs of that site actually wanted me to read their story, they wouldn't hide it behind 3 floating ads, popup videos, and a half page cookie warning. My traffic to their site condones this behavior. ZeroHedge, GatewayPundit, etc, I used to like them, and they are readable with the right tools. But I shouldn't have to fight their page to read it.

I just copy the domain to my hosts file and redirect it to my local host, effectively blacklisting them. I won't participate in their cancer, and I won't condone it with pageviews or clicks.
