I wouldn't be surprised, based on other things I've read, like her bodyguard being killed, and herself voicing her own fears about a car accident being engineered to kill her. Her divorcing the Prince and getting pregnant with someone else could have been the type of situation the family wanted to avoid, and they had grown to dislike her over time for not being traditional.
