Every so often someone bitches that because they blocked someone they can't see all the conversations the blocked person generates.

I'm sure I don't need to spell it out for you. Banning them doesn't fix that, it just removes the convo for everyone. And if nobody wanted to see it they wouldn't care about all the missing comments. Logical incongruity.

Blocking and banning are very different.

The block function is incomplete.

Banning should be reserved for bad actors, like socks, bots, and spam.

Banning doesn't remove the conversations for everyone.
Self-deletion or admin-removal does.

None of this is a reason to defend socks.

Banning doesn't remove the conversations for everyone.

When you block someone and it says there are 16 comments you don't see, those comments wouldn't exist at all if the person had been banned. People complain they don't see those comments but they chose that. And they don't understand how banning does the same thing without the reminder they're missing out.

If you don't want to see those conversations, fine, but I do. You have the option not to see them, I do not have the option to see them if the person is banned.

Yep. I knowed it.

That, among other things means IMO that the block function is very incomplete.

In this case, an option to display the blocked content or the names of those blocked or whatever would help improve things. Otherwise how can you know which of the blocked is gumming up your system in order to see what you're missing? You'd have to unblock all the assholes to find out - and then re-block them after.
