Netflix just released the controversial 'Cuties' and it's worse than you could imagine. Make no mistake: Netflix is at the forefront of sexualizing children and normalizing pedophilia!

This is the result of our society's move away from religious values and toward the secular.

Ironically, while the religious realm was thought to be about the afterlife, it turns out that Christianity in particular was reasonably successful in encouraging stability in the secular realm. The reason for this is that Christianity places a high value on traditional families - with a mother, a father, and children living together - and provides roles within those families that offer meaning to each member of the unit. Individuals understand their role and learn to interact from birth in a way that is logical to them, encouraged (or enforced at times) by those who know them best.

Unfortunately, as US society largely abandoned religious values after WWII (this was a process, not an event) in favor of "science!"( tm ) and progressive social ideology, the positive role models associated with these family structures were lost. It didn't help - needless to say - that the representatives of the church itself were also engaging in immorality with the children of their congregations. This unsurprisingly accelerated the destruction of the moral foundation offered by Christianity in the US.

This model for society wasn't perfect. Humans are imperfect, and there are lots of screwed up families. No argument there. But crime statistics are crystal clear on the link between a lack of family structure and all forms of anti-social behavior. In net terms, traditional families are the foundation of greater stability and meaning for individuals. When society was centered around traditional families, our society functioned more effectively. This is not a belief; it shows up in every statistic on the subject.

What's left today, however? Well, areas with the strongest concentration of "progressive" thinking and politics demonstrate the purest form of the new culture. Look at the most liberal parts of the country (our major cities), and find a massive explosion in sexual abuse. The tip of the spear was the normalization of pornography and changes in terminology such as calling prostitutes "sex workers", suggesting that this is just another acceptable section of our economy. The current flowering of this phenomenon, however, has led to a shocking number of people outright rejecting the biological reality of sex entirely. While I'm not surprised that a percentage of people who are sexually abused as children find no value in maintaining the reality of a sex that has only caused them pain, the official promotion of people violently rejecting the bodies they are born into (which is a form of ritual suicide) is shocking.

In the current model, where are the role models to encourage us in maintaining some sense of self-worth? The political state has decided its rules and policies are better at raising functional citizens than the rules and norms of families. Once again, families are not perfect; but the state's encroachment on these responsibilities has only made matters exponentially worse. Corporations, meanwhile, place zero value on home life, and corporations are now the force that define the structure of our social arrangements through control over our employment (how we must use our time to survive), and where we are encouraged to spend our resources. This is the root of the issue. Letting corporations and politicians (two expressions of the same personality) dictate social norms is disastrous. Politicians find their meaning is exerting power over others; corporations exist to ensure short-term profit. Full stop. Neither the raw exercise of power nor short-term profit motive leave any room for raising healthy humans. Healthy humans - as opposed to humans with miniscule attention spans seeking after the latest shiny gadget - are not easily marketed to.

And sex sells. This is an obviously true statement and has been so forever.

A society built around corporate needs and political narcissists (we are nothing if not that) will develop horrific values leading to maximal possible sexual exploitation.

Welcome "cuties". Just the latest example.

Even though Islam allows (and even promotes) child marriage.

Given what we know from their own writings about the life of Mohammed, I am no fan of Islam. Never have been. He was basically a politician and a general along with being - as you point out - the husband of a 9-year-old girl. I find it depressing that people are able to sustain a religion around this man.

But as I said in my reply to jet199 below, I think Netflix is using the "Islam wrapper" as an excuse to sell pedophilia. I'm not in favor of either act, but the business gaining the most attention and audience for this are Netflix, and they are very intentionally sexually exploiting young girls to do so.

You could make a strong argument that child marriage is a lot better than pedophilia without marriage. So even when compared to the most oppressive, anti western-ideals religion there is atheism is still worse in this regard.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

In Islam you have to have sex to "consummate" the marriage. You can't argue that just because the government gave the creepy old dude a paper that it's suddenly better or okay.

    [–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It is still better than raping a random little girl and leaving her pregnant and alone, which is the Atheist way. At least they are required to take care of the girl and the kids. At least they have to go through a ceremony and have some contact and the kid can prepare mentally for what is about to happen. As fucked up as it is, the Atheist way is STILL MORE FUCKED UP. No amount of "but but but it's so bad" can change that fact.

Yes, Islam is a pedophile religion. Compared to a religionless pedophile culture it is better.

If you are still confused it's because you have probalby been brainwashed into thinking that pedophilia is a religious thing. It is not. It very much exists outside of religion.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That makes sense, but is he really going to take care of her? Even in the US in protestant marriages between two adults you see plenty of abuse and neglect.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Christianity too requires sex to consumate a marriage. The Catholic church allows for annulment of unconsumated marriages, not sure about others but I'd imagine it's common.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

    But did Jesus marry a 9 year-old?

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't need any convincing Islam is garbage, I just meant it's a common theme that marriages aren't valid unless consumated.

    [–]jet199 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

This film isn't a move away from religion.

It's whole point of the plot is to make the Islamic abuse of women look good in comparison to the evil west.

This is why it's shot to look as porny as possible, to purposely horrify people to make other horrible stuff, like child marriage, seem not as bad.

    [–]StillLessons 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

The film operates on two different levels. One is the level you are talking about, the "story" level. It's trying to make some sort of argument.

But the more important level of this film and of all media is the "below the surface emotional response" level. It is here that they make their money. They can claim all they want about the wrapper they are putting around the images they are displaying, but the images have a different purpose inherent within them. It's the classic evening-news schtick of "college girl attacked by brutal man". The wrapper is to demonstrate how righteous they are about violence against women. But they actually post the story because the second they put "college girl", they count on male viewers to watch looking for pictures of a pretty girl. That's where the money comes from. Forget the story and pay attention to the intention of using images, stripped of shallow intellectual excuses.

In the case of Cuties, Netflix is clearly selling video of sexualized young girls. The wrapper makes not a bit of difference to this, their fundamental product.

    [–]jet199 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Netflix may well be hosting the film to make money off of paedos.

However they didn't make the film. They bought it long after it was made. This film wouldn't even exist for them to host if the director wasn't trying to push her religious message.

    [–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That's just not true. The "rebellious" girls are depicted as the heroes, and their abandonment of religion as a victory over oppression.

    [–]jet199 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

They think they're heroes but the audience is supposed to see how disgusting and damaging what they are doing is.

    [–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

And that claim is based on what? Does the movie show them suffering consequences as a result of this that are not portrayed as being the fault of religion? I highly doubt it.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

This country has religious values, but it's not your religion. The people that run this country, they're extremely religious, but they're not Christians. They hate Christ. They are the children of Satan.

    [–]StillLessons 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm not actually a Christian, so my interest isn't so much in the right or wrong of Christianity per se. I do, however, believe as I argue above, that the correlation is real between the loss of a common Christian culture and the destruction of morals that used to be taught in families. I don't have to believe the religious story that was the glue holding society together, to appreciate the effect that it had and mourn the loss of that effect.

    [–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Netflix should be seized by the federal government for this. That's what we do to pedophile sites. But it won't happen to Netflix — because they have the money to pay bribes.

    [–]ANIKAHirsch 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I don't think I can read another word about this movie. I feel sick...

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yep and it's just advertising it. I now want to see it twice as much as I did before. Luckily, twice as much as zero is still zero.

    [–]ANIKAHirsch 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh I think it was the intention of the poster to incite outrage. The reaction was exactly what they were hoping to achieve. The stunning thing is that they've managed to pull this off in the public, and that anyone is still willing to defend them.
