Not completely.

I had an argument with a DoP over this. He thought it would be a great way to not have to pay or have to deal with celebs and also have complete control over his work.

A lot of people in film seem to have no idea why people want to go to see a specific actor in films. They aren't doing because they just like that actor's body or face, there are plenty of pretty failures. So using an actor's image and having someone else or an animator move them around is not going to get people to see a film.

The other way round, getting a famous actor to do the voice and movements of a different character, already does work to draw and audience in animated films. But that isn't offering any of the benefits these guys are looking for. You still have to pay a premium for the actor and rely on them to produce a decent performance.

Actors do have skills, but because they are the "face" of Hollywood, people over estimate how much influence they actually have.

I'm not talking about influence. I'm talking about box office draw. Actors aren't paid millions because their acting is just so amazing, it is because just their name on the picture will bring in many millions more.

I see what you're saying, but it's not that quite cut and dry. Actors often become famous because of their skill in the first place. Some A-listers get rich, decadent, lazy and typecast. Some movies or TV shows are bigger than the actor. Being a box office draw requires you manage your career and pick good projects for your ability, even if the movie doesn't do that well. Chris Pratt does well because he tends to get leading man roles in well-received movies and fans like him personally. On the other hand, Kevin Spacey isn't liked by fans and Hollywood as much anymore, despite his ability and name. Ezra Miller, similar situation. His behavior seems to have driven his fans away, despite his skill and name recognition.

The ultimate for the studios would be a "build" a leading man in AI. He'd be perfect, popular, works tirelessly and you don't have to worry about him having a scandal or saying something you don't like. You merely have to manage him and take him out when it's time.

At this point, I agree.
