I experienced internet from about '02 forward, and the internet from that time period was like an enlightenment-era coffee house compared to what it is now. Bustling with ideas and people looking to form connections. Now it's more like a big city where everyone has to step over the homeless people and you just try not to make eye contact. But thankfully there are little enclaves where the quality of information and quality of relationships still can be high.

IMO, the change came when regular people started using the internet more regularly. The bar for entry has become increasingly lower with each passing decad. The number of knuckle draggers on the internet now is astonishing. If you liked early 2000's internet, you'd have loved 90's BBS'.

Yeah it's an accessibility issue, I agree. Also the average age of an internet user has dropped dramatically in the last decade. Now there are tons of actual children on the internet, whereas in the early 2000s it was far too complex for children (and required a desktop computer, not just some tablet or phone)

there are tons of actual children on the internet,
And those who used to be able to get on it were few enough that they could be taught maturity without flooding the site, and usually bright enough that they made the decision to listen.
Now? Well, it's not just actual children who are acting immaturely, and there are sadly few social repercussions to it.

I agree. On the plus side, things probably won't get worse than they currently are, now that all the children are online basically. So we're at maximum deterioration and we can begin to build new cultures from the chaos.
