For a long time it has not been about the content of a comment or post, but rather the user and who they are in terms of their beliefs. This all makes sense when you think about it as a secular religion. It's like going to a religious website, and posting something completely unrelated but it hints at you not being a follower of the religion. The members of the religion are actively looking for who is and is not a follower and ban accordingly.
