Classic entryism to destruction pattern.

Find a subculture. Convince them to change everything about themselves to appeal to a theoretical general public. Note the general public is entirely uninterested and will never get involved and if they were ever going to join they already would have, or they already are joining at a slow rate. Make the alienating changes. None of the general public joins as per above, and everyone inside leaves because its no longer appealing to the old members. Subculture annihilated, repeat with the next.

This applies to so much of the software universe. It's usually accompanied by propagandizing the 'subculture' on the "need to appeal to a broader audience", and justifying 'simplification' of "bewildering system settings".

Of course, the 'settings' were what made the package configurable to the user's preference...
