I agree that the stairs might have been unsafe. $550 sounds like a cheap ass job. I lived in a shitty 2 story apt. that was built very poorly and the wooden stairs had to be replaced in less than 10 years. It looked OK at first but went to shit very fast. The wooden walkway in the back was so bad that it had to be removed even sooner than that, and when the construction guys removed it some of the brickwork on the outside fell off with it. It was a deathtrap.

Fair enough. But government regulation comes with a steep price tag. And more often than not it creates more problem than it solves, if it solves any to begin with. Market imbalance, corruption, monopolization, stagnation. Also it creates a society of eternal chlidren who view government as eternal parents. Which is precisely the mortal disease all western societies are suffering from as we speak. Infantile trust in government made this global lunacy of government antiviral measures possible.
