I was there during the AIDS crisis. I was just a little kid so it hardly would affect me, but I remember ads about safe sex everywhere and a social phobia that every piece of glass on the street would be an AIDS-infected piece of syringe.

Here, after USSR crashed down, economy was in ruins, a lot of drug addicts appeared, and we had infected drug addicts running around and trying to impale with suringes or scalpels other people to give them HiV. Both police and bandits were hunting down such people and murdering them (not even putting to prison), so it lasted for only half a year or so. It was still very scary time to live.

Is this for real?

At least here and in small cities it was for real. Big cities survived USSR crash pretty well.
