Absolutely laughable and dishonest article.

Of course nobody is protesting - yet. Of course in Japan "a large increase in immigration has mostly been met with a shrug." Of course "anti-immigrant sentiments are widespread, [but] they do not run very deep, or so suggests the lack of substantial opposition."

Quote from the article:

"Today, nearly 3 million migrants live in Japan out of a population of 126 million."

To put those numbers into perspective, Germany currently has 21 million migrants out of a population of 83 million. Meaning this article is comparing a country in which one fiftieth of its population is migrants to countries in which one quarter of its population is migrants.

The author can try again when 25% of Japan's population is migrants, particularly ones who are starkly at odds with Japan's culture. See whether they still react "with a shrug" then.

Good comment!

If they do start letting more people in it will probably be from very specific countries and there will always be xenophobia about it. Japan is a very ethnonational country.

If there isn't already clamour about migration into Japan then there will be and my guess is they will prefer people from Western countries.
