Yeah I agree. I've been working on this theory as well. I think we both came to it independently as well which is a good sign.
An additional aspect I've come up with is that they try and emulate empathy because they realize that its a desirable trait. However, since their emulation is based upon societal norms, what you get is the weird pseudo-empathy where they empathize publicly with people who they think society wants them to empathize with. This leads to virtue signalling.
