Yeah, they created a connection probably without knowing how they looked like. Thanks to the mmorpg creating a situation where they are forced to spend time together. But not only is that rare, there are many horror stories from people who met online.
There are also many examples given of people spending months or years connecting online. Only for the woman to either leave immediately, sometimes not even making contact, upon the first real life meeting, and never to be heard again.

yes but rarely. And there plenty of guys who get rejected by just about every female in their social circle, no matter how much they connect with them. And online dating and random approaches are even less likely to succeed.
