I guess since it's a private company it's easier to punish it for wrongdoing

Not really: 1. It's Italy

  1. You know spaghetti? That's Italian politics. You know molten cheese? It's stringy. Combine the two and you got local politics in Italy, though instead of tomato sauce they have the multiple mafia thingies.

  2. Politicians are already mudslinging with each other (even though it's a private company ;) )

  3. Nobody is talking about the European subsidy for infrastructures possibly being misused for decades in the whole of Italy

  4. There are a whole lot more similar bridges (+- same build year and 'great' maintenance).
