100% correct. Except the quality. BitChute for example is only 720p, as are other sites, or less.

Primarily I've been lazy in this sense while I've been busy trying to save the world on other fronts.

Do you have a favourite reliable Invidious instance?

Ideally I aim to start my own PeerTube in 2021 too, but things are going much slower than I was hoping for so far. So much fucking back pain and/or drama.

I don't really have a favourite, but the instances I regularly use are Snopyta's, Puffyan's, Yewtube and Invidiou.site.
