I found this especially funny, since my grandma got onto my mom for putting skillets in the dishwasher, a while back. Thankfully, they weren't ruined.

Thankfully, they weren't ruined

The only way to ruin cast iron is to crack it. That's the great thing about cast iron, it lasts forever and is pretty hard to fuck up. There's a few ways to strip the "seasoning" (which is really just polymerized fat that becomes a protective black coating) like chemicals in dishwasher machine soap or too high heat.

That last one gets me more than anything. In order to get a good sear on a steak you need a smoking hot pan. The smoking part is the seasoning burning off.

Re-seasoning well is a pain in the ass, but you can put on a ton of layers in a relatively short time on a stovetop rather than an oven, at least on the inside of the skillet. The bottom... Well, that's still a pain.

My grandma thinks it's ruined, if the seasoning is stripped. She also also has a spoon that's only for stirring tea, that she thinks will ruin if it's used for anything else.

Did you mention it's not that kind of teaspoon?

You don't ever let soap touch a cast iron skillet!
