How about hosting your own WordPress blog? It can be done for $5/month, maybe less. Or you could build a static blog site on GitHub pages for free.

I guess everyone has been focused on social media.. but a blog service isn't too far off. Maybe SteemIt or Mastodon would work.

I liked the concept of Mastodon , the problem I had about it ,is the 500 characters limit.

The character limit depends per instance. I'm on an instance with a 10.000 limit. But Mastodon is not for blogging.

Joining the fediverse doesn't mean you can't be banned (by hosting) or blocked (shut out). If you join a service's instance you can still be banned/blocked according to the whims/rules of the instances and mood of the admin(s).

Anyway, I did a "fediverse blog" search and tada: Plume is the name of the 'platform/engine' : for a DIY hosting.
