Because it says in the first sentence that he is 19 years old, and an adult, not an "it".

I listened to this on the podcast Casefile. Very sad. The parents were arrested and vilified in the media. Later evidence was found to support their story. If I recall it had something to do with understanding dingos behaviour and finding the childs missing piece of clothing.
