I would be more concerned that isnt the default setting on my VPN - it is them I am entrusting to obscure my actual IP address without leaving potentially untrustworthy client apps gaping backdoors to my real IP, though yes I agree that this is poor default behavior for a bittorent client. However, bittorent clients have no expectation of privacy, and VPN's do, so I'd ultimately put the blame on them

The torrent client shouldn't actively bypass my VPN though. My VPN is setup to have split tunneling off. As far as I can tell, no other torrent client bypassed my VPN and announced on my real IP.

I agree, thats a terrible default behavior on the client. I guess I know qBittorrent can't be trusted now

Yea, it's just a heads up. I was surprised by this when I checked the torrent IP, since no other torrent clients I've used do this.
