About damn time. It's a wonder it took so long. For all her good qualities, she was blind to this problem for years longer than she should have. In-group psychology is a helluva drug. She better not join the GOP - we need good people willing to run outside of the binary if we ever want real change.

Because if she runs anything other than Democrat she get's dismissed. If she ran independent we would have absolutely no idea who she is at all. If she ran Republican she would be dismissed as being too moderate also Trump was the incumbent (who also was a Democrat until relatively recently btw, worth noting) and she never would have gotten any attention.
As a Democrat she gets the credit of being actually heard out and listened to before they paint her with their typical "canceling brush" like they did. She got a place at the debates and a level of respect that she was able to pivot on which later made her appealing to Fox News just like Caitlyn Jenner.
At this point though she has burned the last of those bridges and can't get anything else out of calling herself a Democrat except maybe a jab about self identification, but that's not her style.
