There are two sexes. Sex is a scientific term describing your physical attributes assigned by birth. Gender on the other hand is a societal attribute that is described by your personality, the type of clothing you wear, the tone of your voice, the length of your hair, etc. Gender could have been based on any other factor in society, but it was decided based on the things listed above. Look backwards in time & you will see that skirts were originally designed for men, and that men with longer hair were deemed more manly than those with shorter hair.

No, gender is a term used in place of sex because people of the past were too prudish to use the word sex. It is no different than calling chicken breast "white meat".
